SPATIAL MOVEMENTS

The project is based on the development of a series of devices to generate spatial movements on audio rate in order to control, in real-time, the position of sounds in a performing space through multichannel surround system. The developed devices will improve the dynamics of multichannel live performances, open new artistic expressive possibilities, new performative approaches for artists who want to experiment with multichannel systems, new aural experiences for audiences unfamiliar with experiencing live music in an immersive listening environment.

PROJECT

“I’m interested in analysing and improving the relationship between real-time sound spatialisation
and digital technology. This project is a research, development, and experimentation in spatial sound
technology which opens up new possibilities to design, perform and experience sound spatially.”
I’m developing a series of devices to generate complex spatial movements on audio rate in order to control, in real-time, the position of sounds in a performing space through a custom multichannel surround system.
That’s enable a creative practice of space and movement in music. The propose is a flexible, intuitive control platform for artists from different performative disciplines to experiment and express their ideas with a new
dimensionality.

ART DIRECTION

“I’ve optimised the software devices to interact with specific surround systems; The first testbed is the Pentacle, a surround system of 18 speakers specifically developed by Fedde ten Berge at STEIM for live and real-time performances. With my project of live electronics LEDEN, I’ve performed in Amsterdam during STEIM SUMMER PARTY and Electronic Extravaganza Festival at Splendor using the Pentacle 15.3 Multichannel System, controlled with my MOVEMENTS devices for a multichannel performance.”

Design, programming and implementation @ STEIM

(Studio for Electro Instrumental Music) is a center for research and development of new musical instruments in the electronic performing arts located in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Electronic music in STEIM’s context is always strongly related to the physical and direct actions of a musician. In this tradition, STEIM supports artists in residence such as composers and performers to develop instruments, which allow for improvisation and performance with individually designed technology.
